The medal was awarded to Sergeant Frederick J. Winser. He was honoured for
his work with the Metropolitan Special Constabulary at Penge Police
Station in South Norwood during the General Strike of 1926.
'Special' award
Sergeant Winser received the award for faithful service in the Special
Constabulary. The Special Constabulary are volunteers who are trained to
work with and support local police officers.
Demonstrating in London
Support from the 'Specials' was needed a great deal during the General
Strike. Angry demonstrations by striking workers led to many arrests. As
happens today, police forces from all over London were asked to help when
large marches took place in the centre of the city.
