This large storage jar was made some time in the early 20th century. It
was used by E. Levy & Co. They were located at an East Dulwich pub at
91 Lordship Lane called the Lord Palmerston. Levy's supplied bottles and
jars for distilleries and suppliers of wine and spirits.
Kosher distillery
This jar was taken from the wine cellars and distillery of M. Chaikin &
Co. They were based at the corner of Brick Lane and Fournier Street in
Spitalfields. Spitalfields was then home to a busy Jewish community.
Chaikin's were manufacturers and suppliers of wine and spirits which they
produced both in the UK and in Palestine. The company was in business from
the early 1890s until 1976.
