The Dulwich Dairy Farm |
The area of East Dulwich now covered by Lordship Lane and its surrounding roads was once part of Friern Manor Farm, which was the last surviving dairy farm in South London by the 18th century. When the farm was sold off large parts of it were purchased by The British Land Company, as part of the speculation surrounding the coming of the railways. British Land then sold off the land in parcels to different firms of builders. They built the roads and many of the Victorian/Edwardian houses which are now so sought after. Unfortunately for the builders it was some years before their investment was realised, as people did not rush to snap up the new homes as had been predicted. |

If you walk around East Dulwich now you will notice along each road that many of the houses are built in small terraces, with differing architectural details. This is because each building firm used its own style. |
