The Festival of Britain took place between May and September 1951. The
London-based centrepieces of the festival were the South Bank Exhibition
and the Festival Pleasure Gardens in Battersea. They were the most visible
elements of a great nation-wide festival which was celebrated in cities,
towns and villages all over Britain.
Why hold a festival for Britain?
After the devastation of the Second World War and years of austerity which
followed, the Festival of Britain aimed to raise the nation's spirits. The
exhibition promoted Britain's new and growing industry, arts and culture.
It was held on the 100th anniversary of an earlier celebration of British
industry, the Great Exhibition of 1851.
Celebrating throughout London
Festivities took place throughout London during 1951. This programme
advertises the activities which took place in Camberwell between May and
September of that year. The Festival of Britain celebrations included a
festival quiz, sporting competitions and an exhibition promoting local
industries.
