First Football Match

My father took me to see Charlton play Wolverhampton Wanderers back in the 1950s. The first time I had been to a football match.

I was struck by the colours, the reds of Charlton and the gold of wolves and the green of the grass and the volume of the event both in terms of space and noise. There was no colour television then and so these images made strong impressions. I remember seeing the player Ron Flowers – he looked a bit like his more famous team mate Billy Wright who wasn’t playing.
