Living in 70s Deptford

by Jeni Honeysett

I think mine was an unusual childhood. My brother and I lived from aged 3 & 5 to 9 & 11 in an Old Peoples Home.

My Mum was the Matron (as they called them then) and we lived in a flat at the top of Marden Court, 29 Edward Street. Despite being a modern building, it has now been knocked down and a new building is in its place.

Mum, Pat, was an organiser. She got everybody involved in different projects in the home and even the most reticent staff and residents would be swept up in the events.

The Deptford Festivals were a highlight. One year we donned tin foil to be all 'Stars Wars', another we were Silver Jubilee majorettes and another we went all Victorian. - We were even featured on the front of the local 'Mercury' paper.

Fundraising fairs at home and the Blackheath Village Fairs also necessitated a theme. A particular favourite was the circus theme, complete with a tent of ferocious animals to view (hamsters etc). We also tried Medieval Dress and once, short skirted French Maids - (yes, even the old ladies!).
