Luxury and more
Built in 1937, the flats were completed in just one year. They were
designed in the Art Deco style by architect G. Kay Green. With around 676
flats, Du Cane Court is thought to be the largest private block of flats
ever built in Europe. At the time of opening, it provided many extra
services such as central heating, constant hot water, a large restaurant
which held regular dinner dances and a licensed club.
The Du Cane family
During the Second World War, Du Cane Court was used to house part of the
civil service. It was chosen for its quick and easy links into the city.
The name comes from the Du Cane family. They were landowners in the 18th
century and it was their land on which the building was constructed.
