SW9 Brixton, Stockwell

Trade card

This way to the undertaker

This trade card advertises the services of the undertaker C.C. Parr & Sons. It dates from the early 19th century. Parr & Sons had their premises on Stockwell Road in Lambeth.

Getting there one way or another

The card is illustrated with a black horse. It shows the undertaker's name and address, and recommends the firm to the reader. The undertaker's is located next to a more familiar sending-off place - the Post Office.

Death and the Victorians

Death and mourning were taken very seriously by the Victorians. The subject gave rise to particular forms of decorative art. The style drew heavily on objects associated with death, funerals and mourning.
