Rent book

Keeping track of your rent

This rent book was issued to Mr J.R. Wilkinson. He rented a property at 4 Midhurst Road in Hanwell. The book records the rent he paid between May 1951 and December 1954.

Experience of renting

Until the late 1950s, renting one's house or flat was more common for many Londoners than today. With increasing post-war prosperity, workers began to be able to save for a deposit on new private housing, and owning one's home became achievable for greater numbers of Londoners. The growing availability of mortgages encouraged this trend.
