POP-OFF

Our family moved into W14 about 1942. Coming from Hammersmith it was pleasant change of culture! But the bombs still arrived. We had moved away from Hammersmith as things were getting hot; being by the river the ack-ack guns were very noisy, but the last straw was one morning a landmine swinging in the trees, so it was off to Warwick Gardens W14. We had some Canadian soldiers billeted on us and a few mad months of local pubs before the dear lads were shipped off to be slaughtered.

Peacetime arrived to reveal the extent of showbiz personalities in the area; F. Howerd, Di Doors, Paul Carpenter, and R. Burton in digs whilst at RADA. Later on Alma Cogan, Brucie (to see you nice), B. B. Daniels and many more.

The story title refers to an unexploded bomb under the house opposite where a Mrs Popoff lived. All attempts to recover this bomb were unsuccessful, something about being in an underground stream and it kept slipping in the mud.

So it’s only a matter of time before Mrs Popoff gets to hear it pop-off. What’s the betting the estate agents keep very quiet about this bit of history when selling half million pound flats BOOOOOOOOOOM.
