This badge protests against nuclear power. The issue was very important
during the 1980s in Britain. This design is just one of many that people
wore to show their opposition. It shows how local politics can make a
difference.
Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament
The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) held demonstrations against
nuclear weapons and nuclear power. They called for their destruction. The
campaign included setting up the Women's Peace Camp at Greenham Common in
Berkshire. The women were protesting against American plans to store
Cruise missiles there. The camp was disbanded in September 2000 after 19
years of continuous occupation.
Other political causes
Wearing CND slogans such as the one on this badge helped draw attention to
the nuclear debate. Organisations such as Friends of the Earth also
produced designs that protested against pollution and nuclear energy and
raised public awareness of environmental issues.
