E16 Canning Town, North Woolwich, Silvertown, Victoria Docks

Bronze flanged axe, Royal Victoria Docks, '30ft below T.H.W.M.'

Bronze in Silvertown

This bronze axe-head dates to around 1400 bc. It was found ten metres below ground during the building of the Royal Victoria Docks at Silvertown in Newham. It was cast in a two-piece mould made of clay or possibly metal. It would have been attached to a wooden haft or handle and used in carpentry.

Nearby tracks

A number of Bronze Age wooden trackways have been found nearby during recent archaeological excavations. It is possible that the Silvertown axe-head was used to construct them.

The axe-head is currently on display in the Museum of London's London before London gallery.
