This 1952 delivery note is from Jay's Furnishing Stores of 25-27 Green
Lanes in Palmer's Green. Like many of London's suburbs, Palmer's Green
developed towards the end of the Victorian period. It grew rapidly in the
early years of the 20th century as more and more people from central
London settled there.
London suburbs grow
Suburbs provided more spacious housing and a healthier environment than
the crowded areas of central London people had left behind. Developers
built thousands of new homes for those looking to improve their standards
of living. Alongside the new houses came shops, schools, hospitals and
other services to serve the growing community.
Local shops
The range of shops and services in the suburbs met most of the local
residents' needs. Residents would have shopped at Jay's to furnish their
new privately owned houses. Jay's sold affordable, mass-produced
furniture that was becoming more readily available during the 1950s.
