The Importance of Emergency Planning (2 of 4)
How can Emergency Planning help? (continued)
In 2005, there was a blast at the Buncefield oil depot in Hemel Hempstead. This building was one of the nearest to the blast, and it suffered extensive damage. Fortunately, the organisation had an Emergency Plan in place, and stored off-site, as well as a contract with a Disaster Recovery firm.
The plan detailed:
- Which important records were required, and where these were located
- Alternative sites that could be used to run the business
- How to divert communications such as telephones and IT
This allowed the organisation to restart their business the following day, whilst other organisations, with far less damage, took months to recover. Up to 40% of these organisations went out of business, as they were unable to continue running without their business critical documentation and a plan to relocate.
