Why is it important to handle museum objects differently?
You may be very used to, and proficient at, handling objects of your own, and wonder why you need to learn how to handle museum objects. Why are they any different? The main differences are outlined below:
- Museum objects are often more fragile, owing to their age
- Museum objects are often more fragile, owing to their usage in the past
- Museum objects are sometimes the only surviving examples, and irreplaceable if damaged or broken
- Museum objects need to last – or to be preserved for as many years as possible
For these reasons, museum objects need to be treated with extra care to ensure that they survive for future generations to learn from and enjoy.
