Common Museum Pests (5 of 10)
Rodents
Which rodents cause problems?
The two types of rodent that cause problems for museums are:
- Mice (mainly living inside)
- Rats (mainly living outside)
Mice more commonly cause damage to museum objects, as they are more frequently found indoors, but rats can also cause a problem. If objects are stored in warehouses or outside stores then rats may be able to access them. Mice and rats like warm, cluttered, undisturbed areas – so good housekeeping is essential in and around the museum to deter them.
