Why do we pack objects?

Museum objects are placed in packaging to provide them with protection and support. In order to choose the most appropriate packing materials and techniques, it is important to understand why the object is being packed.

Objects tend to be packed for one of the following reasons:

  1. The object needs to be moved
  2. The object is going to be put in storage

This e-learning tool discusses the options, materials and techniques that should be considered when an object is being moved. For details on packing objects for storage, please refer to the Packing Museum Objects for Storage e-learning tool.
