Introduction (3 of 11)

What materials can be used for support and protection?

The main packing materials used for supporting objects are as follows:

Acid-free tissue paper

Acid-free tissue paper is archival quality. It comes in both rolls and sheets, and can easily be cut to size with scissors. Single layers are useful for protecting against contact with other objects or storage furniture. The tissue paper can also be made into “puffs” or “nests” into which objects can be placed. The object is protected by the cushioning effect offered by the air inside the puff.

Acid-free cardboard tubes

Acid-free cardboard tubes can be used for supporting materials such as textiles or paper (which can be rolled around them). They can also be used as external protection for rolled items stored within them.
