Why do we pack objects?

Museum objects are placed in packaging to provide them with protection and support. In order to choose the most appropriate packing materials and techniques, it is important to understand why the object is being packed.

Reasons for packing an object:

  1. The object is going to be put in storage
  2. The object needs to be moved

This e-learning tool discusses the options, materials and techniques that should be considered when an object is being placed in storage. For details on packing for moving objects, please refer to Packing Museum Objects for Moving.
