Assessing the Object (1 of 9)

What is the object made from?

By assessing an object, you can choose the most appropriate type of packaging for it. You will need to look at:

The material of the object

The material that an object is made from will generally dictate the kind of environment in which it should be stored to prevent it from deteriorating. Some materials require a more stable environment (in terms of temperature and relative humidity) than others, and this should influence your choice of packaging.

Ultraviolet and visible light affect some material types more than others. To stop them from fading, light sensitive materials (for example, textiles and paper) should be placed in packaging that will protect them from light.

Some materials, such as glass and ceramics, are naturally more delicate than others, and may need more support. Stone objects, on the other hand, tend to be more robust, and support will not be such an issue.
