Ceramic boot warmers

Pair of ceramic boot warmers, c.1860

Fill with hot water for toasty boots!

Finding ways to keep warm was particularly important in the days before central heating and double-glazing. This display brings together objects made or used by Londoners in the past to keep warm during the bitter winter months. Many are no longer used (or at least not by many) as more practical or ethical alternatives have been developed. Some of the situations these objects were developed for – such as driving in half-open cars or carriages – also no longer apply. Learn more about some of the muffs on display in Keeping Warm.
