London Museum Development conference, 2019

On Wednesday 13 March, 2019, we welcomed all those working and with an interest in the London museums sector to the Museum of London for the London Museum Development conference. The morning consisted of keynote speeches and exciting news and announcements about the London museums sector. Isabel Wilson, Senior Officer Museum Development and Michael Cooke, London Museums Relationship Manager at Arts Council England (ACE), updated us on the latest news about ACE’s work with the museums sector, such as the re-launched Accreditation scheme, National Lottery project grants, its vision for Museum Development and the other Sector Support Organisations, and the latest on its action plan for the 2017 Mendoza Review of the English museums sector.

Ben Travers then discussed the findings from our first annual survey of London's museums, highlighting the fantastic work of the sector in our region. For full information about this go to our Museums Survey page.

In the afternoon, Finbarr Whooley, Director of Content and Sara Wajid, Head of Engagement at the Museum of London gave us the latest news on the move to the new museum at West Smithfield, as well as details of potential partnership opportunities with the project in the near future.

The event was overbooked three times over and we're only sorry we couldn't have accommodated more people. The conference and follow on visit to the new Museum of London site were full of great conversations, and you can find lots of the reaction from the event on Twitter, both through @LondonMusDev and via the #LMDConference. The conference was recorded and we have published a playlist featuring all of the event speakers. Thanks again to ACE, the new Museum of London team and to the attendees for all their contributions on the day.
