Assessing the Move (1 of 9)
Why is the object being moved?
There are several reasons for moving a museum object. These reasons can be categorised as planned or unplanned moves.
Planned moves
- Changing displays, and relocation of objects. Objects may be moved during display preparations. These moves will often be over short distances, but a large number of objects may be involved.
- Sending and returning loans. This may include international travel.
- Movement of collections during building works, in order to protect the objects from dust and debris.
- Movement of objects for conservation or other work.
Unplanned moves
- It may be necessary to move a large number of objects quickly in response to a disaster, e.g. flood or fire. This will involve very different motives and packing strategies to planned moves. Please refer to the Introduction to Emergency Planning e-learning tool for more information on disaster planning and response.
