Lamp

Date: 1200s

This is the base of a small Rhenish Red-painted ware hanging lamp, found in a cesspit behind a medieval house on Milk Street which, in 1276, belonged to Bonamicus 'Jew of York'. This type of pottery came from the Cologne area in Germany. The lamp, when complete, would have been filled with animal fat and had a floating wick. It would probably have been rather smoky and smelly to use.
