Object loans

The museum seeks to make the collections accessible through an intensive programme of short and long term loans to a number of partner institutions in London, the UK and abroad.

A moratorium on lending from the collection will be introduced from 1 July 2020, to allow us to focus on relocating the collection to our new site in West Smithfield. Requests for exhibitions opening before that date may be received according to the deadlines set out below. We expect to re-open the lending programme within 6 months of opening our new museum (currently scheduled in 2023), and will provide further details in due course.

Please note that as the museum re-focuses its resources ahead of its planned relocation to West Smithfield, we have increased our minimum deadlines for loan requests to 12 months for all types of loan, except for London non-National Museums for whom a 6 month deadline is still in operation.

Object requests will be limited to 5 objects per request.

For complex, large or costume and textile based loans, or for new long-term loans we recommend submitting your request as far as possible in advance of the opening date.

All lending commitments which have already been agreed will of course be honoured.
