Volunteering at the London Archaeological Archive and Research Centre

Volunteers are an integral part of the life and work of the London Archaeological Archive and Research Centre (LAARC), which stores the archives of thousands of excavations from the Greater London area.

The LAARC offers a range of volunteer opportunities that engage volunteers with the history of London through a unique learning and volunteer experience. Please see details of our different programmes below.

Work Experience

We offer one-week work experience placements in the LAARC, involving a range of archive work. These run for 5 days (Monday-Friday) and are open to young people aged 16-19. See the Role Description (Word 142kb) for further details.

Work experience will be available on the following fixed dates in 2013:

  • 5-9 August 2013 (Applications are now OPEN - please complete an Application Form Word 171kb)

Placements

Records Placement (x1)

The LAARC is offering a one month (5 days per week) placement in its records department. This placement will suit people considering a qualification in archiving or current students of archaeology/records and archive management. Work will involve the cataloguing and curation of archaeological records (in a variety of media including e.g. paper, digital, photographic etc.).

Applications for records placements are now CLOSED and will re-open next year in 2014.

Finds Placement (x2)

The LAARC is offering x2 two-week (5 days per week) placements in its finds department. This placement would suit current undergraduate/postgraduate students of archaeology and related disciplines. Work will involve the inventorying and processing of deposited material and offer understanding of how an archaeological archive operates and is curated.

Applications for finds placements are now CLOSED and will re-open next year in 2014.

Volunteer Inclusion Programme

Our award-winning volunteer inclusion projects (VIP) are open to anyone with an interest in London’s history and who want to get their hands on real archaeology, helping the Museum improve its collections. Projects typically run for 10 weeks, volunteering one day per week. See our museum blog for further details:
